Abbreviated Statement of Bishop Robert W. Muench, Bishop of Baton Rouge on the
USCCB's Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty on its April 12 Statement "Our
First, Most Cherished Liberty" (April 13, 2012)
On April 12, the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty of the U. S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops issued a statement: "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty," outlining the
bishops' concerns over threats to religious liberty, both at home and abroad. This
comprehensive and cogent document covered a plethora of issues which have arisen in
the last several years, spanning national, state, local, and even international, areas, of
which the first was The Health and Human Services mandate forcing all employers,
including religious organizations, to provide for and pay for coverage of employees'
contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs even when they have moral
objections to them.
The document quoted supportive statements of the Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King from his famous 1963 "Letter
from Birmingham Jail" and even a recent unanimous Supreme Court judgment
affirming the importance of religious freedom as the first freedom.
The statement concludes with a call, suggesting the fourteen days from June 21 to July 4
"be dedicated to this' fortnight for freedom', in which special events might be arranged
to highlight the importance of defending our first freedom."
I will be taking up this matter with our priests in our monthly presbyteral council
meeting to plan how we might implement this suggestion in the Diocese of Baton
Rouge.
In the meantime I ask all of us to pray and commit ourselves for this critical matter
before us.

Strong Catholic Families, Strong Catholic Youth Presentation Held

St. Jean Vianney Education Commission sponsored the first of two presentations

on the topic Strong Catholic Families Tuesday night, March 13th.  Mr. Chris Redden presented to forty participants from the Catholic School, Religious Education Program and the general parish community, insights gained from a multi year survey of Catholics by the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry . When asked about the most important influences in their lives, teens consistently list their parents as the people they first look to for help, guidance, advice and approval. When it comes to shaping values and attitudes about faith and life, parents, whether they realize it or not, have a greater impact on their teens than peer groups or the media.  Mr. Redden led the group in discussion and many gained new insights in the process. This presentation will be repeated on Sunday April 22, at 6:30pm, [after the 5:30pm Mass] in the Parish Hall. Pizza and drinks will be provided; free babysitting as well. Plan on attending!

Together Baton Rouge and the Transit Issue

  • 0

Many parishioners have taken the opportunity to learn more about Together Baton Rouge and their interest in reforming the transit system (CATS) in our city.  Opportunities to learn continue to surface throughout our city.  The League of Women Voters will host a debate on the issue on March 15, and TBR will host a city wide gathering at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church on March 20. Our Parish Council and our TBR Target Group will host a presentation on April 17 at 6:30 p.m. in Fr. Engles Hall.   Voting for a dedicated funding source will occur for residents living within the city limits of Baton Rouge on April 21.  If you have not been able to attend one of the transit meetings, you will certainily want to join others from our parish on March 20  or April 17.  As Catholics it is our responsibility to participate in our society, and seek together the common good and well-being of all, including learning more about how our city bus system affects us all.

Together Baton Rouge Annual Celebration

Earlier this year the member institutions of the Together Baton Rouge organization gathered to celebrate the highlights of the past year’s accomplishments. It was an inspiring opportunity to look back and be proud of what the organization has become for our community of Baton Rouge.
